Reminder: New Requirements for 2026 Tab Renewals
Tab renewals take place every two years. In order for Fleet Services to ensure that each University licensed vehicle is safe for continued operation, Fleet requires that any vehicle that isn’t regularly maintained at the Twin Cities campus' Fleet Shop must be inspected by a local shop. This includes all department-leased and department-owned vehicles. The inspecting technician must complete and sign Fleet’s University of Minnesota Biennial Inspection Form.
Vehicle tabs were distributed this past spring and are valid through February 2026. The inspection form has recently been updated to keep up with fleet industry safety standards. Please invest some time to become acquainted with this new form as its more detailed inspection items could lead to a higher frequency of inspection failures in department-owned vehicles since they are typically kept for longer than leased vehicles.
In order to receive new tabs in 2026, each vehicle must pass inspection.
If, after reviewing this form, you are not sure your vehicle will pass all line items noted in 2026, please plan ahead and submit a New Vehicle Request Form to [email protected] to begin the vehicle ordering process for a new vehicle.
Transitioning from Gas to Hybrids and Electric Vehicles (EVs)
Advancing University sustainability initiatives and reducing our carbon footprint continues to be a high priority. In alignment with the University Climate Action Plan, the Twin Cities campus is actively embarking on an important initiative to transition our vehicle fleet from traditional gas engines to hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce our emissions. Reducing carbon emissions is essential in promoting a healthier, more sustainable campus environment. By adopting hybrid and electric vehicles, we can significantly lower our greenhouse gas emissions, decrease our reliance on fossil fuels, and set a leading example in environmental stewardship within the higher education community.
With recent improvements in vehicle production and availability, Fleet Services now has greater access to hybrid and electric vehicles than in previous years.
What this means for you
While some departments have already begun to transition to greener fleet options, Fleet Services will be encouraging all departments to support this initiative by selecting hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric options when replacing aging vehicles.
