Embracing active mobility for a healthier, greener future

Welcome to a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle through active mobility. In a world where our choices impact our wellbeing and the environment, opting for human-powered modes of transportation - such as walking, cycling, or jogging - holds the key to numerous benefits.

Health

Mental health

Engaging in active mobility has been linked to reduced stress levels and improved mental wellbeing. Walking or cycling can provide a break from the stresses of daily life and contribute to a positive mental state.

Physical health

Walking or cycling as a means of transportation promotes physical activity, which is crucial for maintaining good health. Regular physical activity helps prevent chronic diseases, improves heart health, and improves overall wellbeing.

Physical fitness

Incorporating active mobility into daily routines can contribute to increased physical fitness and combat sedentary lifestyles associated with health issues.

Safety

Safer streets

Active mobility can contribute to safer streets by promoting slower speeds and increased awareness among road users.

Environment

Reduced emissions

Active mobility is environmentally friendly as it produces no emissions or pollution. Unlike motorized transit, it does not contribute to air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, or noise pollution, making it a highly sustainable option.

Community

Social interaction

Active mobility promotes social interaction and a sense of community. People walking or cycling more are more likely to engage with each other and their surroundings, fostering a greater sense of community.

Improved accessibility

Active mobility can improve access to public spaces, businesses, and services. It provides a mode of transportation that is accessible to a broader range of people, including those who don't drive.

Economy

Cost savings

Walking or cycling is generally more cost-effective than owning and maintaining a car. This can lead to financial savings for individuals and communities!

Reduced traffic congestion

Active mobility can help alleviate traffic congestion on campus. By encouraging people to walk or cycle, fewer cars are on the road, leading to smoother traffic flow and reduced pressure on transportation infrastructure.

Active mobility news

Oak Street SE between University Avenue and Washington Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction beginning June 16 through August.

We're excited to announce that our Gopher Bikes program has been recognized with the 2025 Apex Award for Innovation!
