Safety is a shared responsibility.

It is our job as community members to ensure we act in a safe manner for those around us. You can find more safety tips on Safe Campus.

When you walk

Obey "Walk/Don’t Walk" signals

Pedestrians may only enter a signalized intersection when the "Walk" signal is shown. They may not enter a crosswalk with a flashing or steady "Don’t Walk" signal.

Do not enter the crosswalk if approaching vehicles cannot stop

Motorists must stop to yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. On the other hand, pedestrians may not enter a crosswalk if it's impossible for a driver to stop. The word "crosswalk" applies to both marked and unmarked areas where pedestrians can gain the right-of-way.

When you bike or scooter

Travel close to the right edge of the road

Bicyclists must travel as close as practicable—not as close as possible—to the right edge of the road.

They must do this except when:

  • overtaking or passing another vehicle moving in the same direction
  • preparing for a left turn
  • reasonably necessary to avoid vehicles, narrow lane widths or other hazards that make it unsafe to continue alone the right edge
  • riding in a bicycle lane

Two bikes can ride side by side

Bicyclists may ride alongside each other in a single travel lane. That is, if they do not impede normal and reasonable movement of traffic.

Signal turns and lane changes

Bicyclists must signal turns and lane changes unless both arms are needed to control the bicycle.

Ride with traffic and off of the sidewalk

Bicyclists must ride with traffic on the right side of the road and keep off of all sidewalks while on campus. If you need to bike on a sidewalk, get off of the bike and walk it to where you need to go.

Park only at bike racks

Do parkDo not park
  • At any public bike rack

Motor–assisted devices in buildings

E–bikes and scooters are a fast, fun way to get around campus. To keep our halls safe and accessible to all Gophers, make sure to operate and store these devices outside.

Board of Regents Traffic Ordinance No. 7 states that E–bikes and scooters should not be driven in University of Minnesota buildings, and may not be stored in classrooms, auditoriums, and laboratories. These devices are also not allowed in elevators or University residence halls.

Devices necessary for accessibility such as wheelchairs, including motorized chairs, and other personal mobility aids used by individuals with disabilities are exempt from this rule.
