Active Transportation - Fiscal Year 2024

Embracing a Healthier, More Sustainable Lifestyle through Active Transportation

In a world where our choices significantly impact our well-being and the environment, opting for human-powered modes of transportation such as walking and cycling offers numerous benefits.

Walk

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus is designed with walkers in mind, and efforts to create more paths and trails are ongoing. We actively monitor and survey walkways to enhance usage patterns and safety.

Gopher Way

Gopher Way Sign

The Gopher Way is a network of tunnels and skyways connecting many buildings on campus. Developed by PTS in 2000 and maintained by Facilities Management, this system features signs directing travelers along accessible routes.

Bike and scooter

Bicycling is a healthy, cost-effective way for students, faculty, staff, and visitors to navigate campus. Whether biking once a week or every day, it helps reduce traffic congestion and lower emissions for cleaner air.

The University collaborates with various groups to consistently rank as a platinum-level bicycle-friendly university with the League of American Bicyclists.

Bike Center and Zap! Program

Our Bike Center is in a transition period this year with our longtime partner Hub Bike Coop closing down their operations. We look forward to the things to come and will have news this year.

Our Zap! Program remains as strong as ever, with over 1,100 active members with RFID tags on their bikes earning benefits and incentives by biking to campus!
