University of Minnesota Ordinance No. 7 is in place primarily for safety and accessibility:
- Fire Safety Risk: The lithium-ion batteries found in many of these devices are a significant fire hazard, especially when charging or damaged.
- Obstruction/Tripping Hazard: Devices stored in hallways, stairwells, and doorways block egress routes and create dangerous tripping hazards.
- Damage: Transporting devices indoors can cause damage to walls, floors, and other University property.
