Hennepin County’s Fourth Street improvement project is in full swing on the East Bank. Here are some important lane reductions and closures to be aware of:

4th Street reduced to one lane between 17th Avenue and I-35W

4th Street is reduced to one lane between 17th Avenue and I-35W. Traffic is shifted to the south side of 4th Street while crews work along the north side of the street throughout the project area.

  • Expect delays when traveling in the construction area.
  • Plan an alternative route or allow extra time.
  • People walking and biking will be provided with a detour around the work area.

Intersection work at 13th Avenue SE

The southbound lane of 13th Avenue SE is closed between 5th Street and 4th Street.

  • Follow the detour using 12th Avenue SE. T

Work at 15th Avenue SE

Beginning Monday, July 22, 15th Avenue SE will be fully closed between University Avenue and 4th Street.

  • Since 5th Street is closed for intersection improvements at 15th Avenue, no turns will be allowed at 4th Street and 15th Avenue SE.

Are there alternate routes to 35W?

Turn right out of the Fourth Street Ramp and continue on 17th Avenue to Pillsbury Drive SE. Turn right onto Pillsbury Drive, then left onto Pleasant Street SE. Follow the bridge across Washington Avenue to access 35W.

Turn left out of Fourth Street Ramp and then immediately turn right onto 5th Street SE. Follow this road around the stadium and turn right onto 23rd Avenue SE, then left onto University Avenue SE. Follow University Avenue to Minnesota Highway 280 North, which connects to 35W North near Lauderdale.

How should I get to I-94?

Turn left out of Fourth Street Ramp and then immediately turn right onto 5th Street SE. Follow this road around the stadium and turn right onto 23rd Avenue SE, which turns into Huron Boulevard and connects to both directions of Interstate 94.

Are alternate parking arrangements available?

We cannot offer temporary, alternative parking options for those impacted by construction traffic. During the fall and spring semesters, approximately 15,000 people are parked on campus at any time of day. Managing the limited parking space on our urban campuses while ensuring employees, students, and the public can access parking is challenging. Due to the space limitations, the volume of contract holders requesting alternative parking, and the number of people on wait lists, moving the thousands of contracts impacted by the 4th Street project would not be manageable or equitable.

If you would like to transfer your contract to another location using the standard contract procedure, please use the Wait List & Contract Form for University Faculty & Staff or the Student Contract form. Please be aware that if you transfer your contract, returning to your current location will be subject to the waitlist.

An upcoming construction project at the Gopher Lot will affect parking arrangements. We will begin adding additional lanes to the Gopher Lot and merging it with Lot 2. After construction, Lot 2 will no longer exist, and all contracts for Lot 2 will be converted to Gopher Lot contracts.

Union Street SE will be closed to pedestrians, bikes, and vehicles while it is reconstructed from July 15, through August 2.

Metro Transit will be conducting maintenance on Green Line corridor infrastructure on the East Bank of the Twin Cities Campus this weekend.

The north vehicle and bike lanes of Sixth Street will be closed Thursday, July 11 through Wednesday, July 31 for maintenance.

Beginning on June 17, Washington Avenue Ramp and the surrounding area will be undergoing maintenance. Traffic impacts are expected.

On Saturday, June 15, Metro Transit will make changes to transit service throughout the metro. Quarterly service changes adapt and adjust the service based on current and projected ridership and the available resources and driver workforce.

Routes that serve the University of Minnesota will reduce trip frequency for the summer months but will restore trips when the U of M resumes classes in the fall.

From Monday, June 3 through Wednesday, July 10, Pleasant Street SE between Arlington Street and the Washington Avenue Bridge will be closed to all vehicle traffic. Additionally, the Washington Avenue Bridge will be closed to westbound vehicles.

As part of the Fourth Street construction project we shared earlier this month, please be aware of two upcoming road closures.
