Fourth and University Improvements

Project dates: March 2024 – December 2025

Hennepin County is improving University Avenue (County Road 36) and Fourth Street (County Road 37) between I-35W and Oak Street in Minneapolis.

Park and drive

High impact

The area is open to traffic, but drivers should expect large delays. We advise planning an alternate route when possible.

  • Fourth Street reduced to one lane between 17th Avenue and I-35W.
  • 13th Avenue SE southbound is closed at 4th Street.
  • 10th Avenue SE north is closed at 4th Street.
  • 15th Avenue SE between 4th Street and 5th Street will be closed from September 4–21.
  • University Avenue from I-35W to 13th Avenue will be undergoing intermittent lane closures.

Transit

High impact

Transit is still operating but may be on detour. View rider alerts from Metro Transit and Campus Transit. Expect route delays.

Walk, bike, and scooter

Low impact

The area is open to pedestrians and bikes/scooters. A small detour may be required (marked).

  • The east sidewalk of 15th Avenue SE between 4th Street and 5th Street will be closed from September 4–21.

Project updates

Hennepin County will close 15th Avenue SE between Fourth and Fifth streets on Wednesday, September 4. The closure is expected to last about three weeks.

A single lane of University Avenue will be closed intermittently between I-35W and 13th Avenue.

Hennepin County’s Fourth Street improvement project is in full swing on the East Bank, and there are some important lane reductions and closures to be aware of.

Beginning Monday, July 1, Fourth Street will be reduced to one lane between Oak Street and 15th Avenue SE.

As part of the Fourth Street construction project we shared earlier this month, please be aware of two upcoming road closures.
