University Avenue Reduced to One Lane Near Dinkytown March 31

University Avenue will reduce to one lane between 10th Avenue SE and 14th Avenue SE the week of March 31.

Hennepin County will begin phase 2 of the University Avenue and Fourth Street Improvement Project during the week of March 31. This phase will reduce traffic to one lane of University Avenue between 10th Avenue SE and 14th Avenue SE.

The lane reduction is expected to last through May. Plan extra time for your commute if you are entering campus via University Avenue through Dinkytown. 

Additionally, 11th Avenue south of University Avenue will be closed during the same timeframe. Sanford and Wilkins Hall will remain accessible from the intersection at 12th Avenue.

Transit impacts

  • The bus stop at Sanford Hall will be closed until after graduation.
  • The 122/University Ave Circulator will continue on 10th Avenue SE to 5th Street SE, east on 5th Street to 14th Avenue SE, south on 14th Avenue, back to University Avenue, and resume regular route.
  • The 125/Dinkytown Connector will continue on 10th Avenue SE to 5th Street SE, east on 5th Street to 15th Avenue SE, north on 15th Avenue, west on 7th Street SE, and resume regular route.
  • Both routes will serve temporary bus stops on 5th Street SE at 11th Avenue SE, near Pillsbury Court, and at 13th Avenue SE.

 Walk, bike, and scooter impacts

  • The south sidewalk of University Avenue will be closed during construction. Use a marked crossing to get to the north side of the road.
  • Bike lanes along University Avenue will be disrupted. Riders and motorists must share the road.
  • Sanford and Wilkins Hall residents should use the back sidewalk south of the residence halls to avoid construction.

Remember to keep safety in mind when navigating the area. 

  • 11th Street will be closed south of University Avenue, so enter the parking lot from University Avenue at 12th Street
  • Don't cross University Avenue at unsafe intersections–use the walking routes below.
    • Going north or east
      • The University Avenue south sidewalk will be closed between 11th Avenue and 13th Avenue. The north sidewalk will be closed after 13th Avenue. Use the crossings at 11th Avenue or 13th Avenue to cross.
      • Follow 11th Avenue north to 5th Street to catch the 122 and 125 campus buses.
    • Going west
      • Exit the building and go south to the alternate sidewalk, follow until it connects with the open south sidewalk of University Avenue at 13th Avenue.
