Paratransit Rider Responsibilities

Transit riders have responsibilities. This code of conduct applies to all riders. 

Keep your community in mind. Do your part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 

PPE required!

  • Riders must wear a face covering.
  • Wash or sanitize your hands before boarding the vehicle or use gloves.

All students, faculty, staff, and other riders are required to wear a face mask that is properly fitted to cover the wearer's nose and mouth, wrap under the chin, and not have any noticeable gaps.  Please see the University's Face Covering Protocol for additional information.

The Disability Resource Center has clear masks and basic face shields available for students with disabilities and medical conditions upon request. Please contact us at drc@umn.edu to request a clear mask or a basic face shield. Please note: clear masks are expected to be delivered mid- to late-August. 

If you have disability-related concerns about the face coverings on campus policy or a clear mask or basic face shield will not work for you, please connect with your assigned Access Consultant if you’re registered with our office as soon as possible to explore the type of face covering that might work best for you. If you are not registered with our office, please contact us at drc@umn.edu or leave a message at  612-626-1333 to talk with drop-in staff. Someone will return your call or respond by email as soon as we are able.

For the health and safety of our community, the Disability Resource Center is not waiving face coverings, however, alternative accommodations will be explored. Please note that the determination of reasonable accommodations takes time. Please contact the DRC as soon as possible if you believe you need alternative accommodations.

Be aware of COVID-19-related service changes 
All appointments are now 30 minutes. This will reduce the number of appointments available. If this causes you to be unable to schedule a ride appointment, please consider the following options: 

  • Schedule a ride earlier or later than necessary to ensure you get to your destination timely
  • Use regular route campus transit. All buses are wheelchair-lift equipped.
  • Consider using Metro Transit’s services. 
    • Metromobility: Metro Mobility is a shared public transportation service for certified riders who are unable to use regular fixed-route buses due to a disability or health condition. Rides are provided for any purpose.
    • The University partners with Metro Transit to offer discount passes/fares. All Metro Transit vehicles are accessible. Learn more: 
      • Campus Zone Pass: Free pass for the three on-campus light rail stations (trains are accessible)
      • U-Pass: Unlimited metro area transit rides for students. $114/semester and includes Guaranteed Ride Home
      • Metropass: Unlimited metro area transit rides for students. $83/monthand includes Guaranteed Ride Home
  • Consider carpooling, if possible.

If both the driver and the passenger could minimize talking during the trip, that would also reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.


Do not distract the driver or bother others
Interfering with the safe operation of a transit vehicle is not only dumb, but hazardous to you and everyone else 

No Smoking!
There is no smoking on campus, including University buses and paratransit vehicles (including e-cigarettes). 

Make the ride comfortable for everyone 
Designated seats at the front of every bus are reserved for seniors and customers with disabilities. Please surrender your seat to these customers when they board.

Use headphones and respect others' privacy
Groove, jam, rock out – just realize that it’s your own soundtrack. Don’t share it with others.

Speak quietly and Watch your language
If you talk on your phone, remember that you’ve got a built-in audience. Be mindful of your language, keep your voice low and your call brief.Using profanity or derogatory statements is not tolerated on buses or trains. 

Keep it clean
Respect those who will ride after you. Keep your feet off the seats and take litter off with you when you leave.

No shirt, no shoes, no service
Just like in stores and other businesses, customers without shirts or shoes will be refused service.

No eating or drinks in uncovered containers
You’re welcome to bring your morning coffee or lunch with you. Just make sure it’s in a sealed container – and take the container off the bus with you when you leave.

Pet carriers are required
Pets are welcome on buses and trains as long as they are kept in animal carriers. Service animals are exempt.
