Parking & Transportation Services Mission Statement 

Parking & Transportation Services (PTS) is a self-supporting unit of the University of Minnesota within  Auxiliary Services. The department is responsible for the administration, operation and maintenance of  reliable and efficient transportation services on the Twin Cities campus including transit, parking, fleet,  streets, walkways and way-finding. PTS supports alternatives to the single occupant vehicle and  promotes programs to encourage the University community to walk, bike, carpool or take the bus. The  department handles compliance documentation for all University vehicles or licensed equipment and  administers the fuel credit card, and vehicle insurance and safety.  

Position Description: 

The Transportation Programs Intern is an important part of PTS’ facilities and transportation systems team, led by the Assistant Director of Facilities and Transportation Systems. The Transportation Programs Intern role reports to the Transportation Programs Manager and will assist in the development, activities and promotion of the Campus’ travel demand management (TDM) that encourage sustainable and healthy commuting practices.  

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in Dero ZAP bike commuter incentive program coordination including compiling user data for health insurance premium reductions, securing and distributing incentive discounts, as well as coordinating quarterly team competitions. 
  • Assist with Gopher Bike Program activities including user monitoring, bike maintenance and promotion.
  • Assist in the coordination and administration of bike parking contracts rentals. 
  • Customer communications including technical assistance/troubleshooting, writing and distributing a quarterly ZAP program newsletter, and answering questions about biking, electric vehicles and alternative transportation on campus.  
  • Perform field duties relating to bike infrastructure such as tagging abandoned bikes on campus and assisting with the coordination of their removal.
  • Perform field duties relating to electric vehicle charging infrastructure such as monitoring parking compliance and station usage.
  • Perform field duties relating to campus shared bike and scooter operation such as monitoring parking compliance and rider education.
  • Maintaining an ArcGIS mapping of alternative transportation infrastructure. 
  • Assist in TDM outreach and education events. 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Current University of Minnesota student (Undergraduate or Graduate) registered for 6 or more credit hours. 
  • Able to work 10-20 hours/week during spring/fall semester and potentially full time during summer semester. 
  • Desire to learn and contribute to the learning of others.
  • Possess mechanical aptitude and the desire to learn basic bike maintenance skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to manage multiple projects, exceptional attention to detail, data analysis skills, and ability to interact with clients and staff in a professional manner. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Major related to transportation, urban studies/planning, geography,  or civil engineering. 
  • Working knowledge of computers and programs including Google and Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and ArcGIS (GIS online and/or ArcMap). 
  •  Strong interest in biking, alternative transportation, planning and/or sustainability.

 

Compensation and benefits:  

● $17/hour with potential for a $.25 annual increase (based on length of employment) ● Negotiable internship length
