The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced yesterday that the ramp from Huron Boulevard to eastbound I-94 will close from Sunday, October 2 until Wednesday, October 12. Motorists leaving the University campus and traveling east on Interstate 94 should expect significant delays. The work is part of the Minnesota Department of Transportation's on-going freeway improvement project between downtowns Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Updated: 10/3/11 - The City of Minneapolis has re-opened access to the Riverside Ave Bridge. The signed detour route for the closure of the Huron Blvd to EB94 ramp will be to send traffic:

  • onto WB94 from Huron Boulevard
  • exit at Riverside Ave, turn left (south) on Riverside Avenue
  • turn left (east) on 9th Street and onto the on-ramp for EB94

The original detour route for the closure will not be signed but can be used as an alternative. The alternate detour is to send traffic:

  • east on University Avenue
  • south on Eustis Street
  • east on Franklin Avenue
  • onto the east bound I-94 ramp at Franklin and Highway 280

Again, this alternate detour route will not be signed.

Due to Central Corridor Light Rail Transit construction at University Avenue and Highway 280, congestion on the detour route is expected to be heavy, and members of the University community who are familiar with the area are encouraged to seek out other possible routes. Those routes could include:

  • west on Washington Avenue (to the West Bank)
  • south on Cedar Avenue
  • onto east bound I-94 ramp at Cedar Avenue and I-94
  • south on East or West River Parkway
  • east on Lake Street/Marshall Avenue
  • north on Cretin Avenue
  • onto east bound I-94 at Cretin Avenue and I-94
  • north on 15th Avenue SE
  • east on Elm Street/Kasota Avenue
  • south on Highway 280
  • onto east bound I-94

In addition, two ramp closures scheduled for over-night hours may also affect University motorists. The ramp from Huron Boulevard to eastbound I-94 will close from 12:01 a.m. until 2 a.m. on September 30, and the ramp from Cedar Avenue to eastbound I-94 will close from 2 a.m. until 6 a.m. on October 3. These over-night closures are not expected to create major disruptions.
